Césaire, Aimé. Discourse on Colonialism (downloadable pdf)
For our first day on Césaire’s Discourse on Colonialism, we will read pp. 31-46.
This edition of Césaire’s famous essay/manifesto was published as a special 50th anniversary edition in 2000 (the text was first published, in French, in 1950) with a new introduction by a famous American scholar, Robin D.G. Kelley. For our first day on the Discourse, we will also read Kelley’s introduction (“A Poetics of Anticolonialism”) in its entirety. Kelley’s intro can be found in the above full-text pdf or below as a separate file.
Discussion leaders for today’s session should be sure to communicate with each other and organize/distribute their time so that both Césaire’s and Kelley’s texts are treated during the discussion.
