Below is a downloadable pdf of the first 3 chapters of Krog’s memoir. I am only asking you to read Chapters 1 and 2 — but including Chapter 3 as a kind of bonus, for those who wish to read more. This is dense prose, but also, I think, very readable and worth it.

You may wish to do some research on the history of the TRC (Truth and Reconciliation Commission) in South Africa before getting started on the reading, as this will help you to understand the reading more clearly.

Krog starts with the very early process of setting up the commission — which initially privileged a lot of bureaucratic maneuvering and produced a lot of political/bureaucratic infighting (including between far right militia groups/white supremacist militia groups such as those led by TerreBlanche and the ANC — the majority-black liberation party). This is the focus of Ch. 1 — which you may find more difficult to understand (and should feel free to skim).
